Serenato and Mariachi Bands

The main reason we’ve all come to Colombia is for a wedding.
When we heard that the pre-wedding celebrations involved our friend, Christo, having to serenade his bride this only sweetened the deal.
We excitedly gathered at the bride’s family home in Bogota to take in a traditional serenato complete with a full mariachi band and a South African twist of karaoke. Needless to say it was an extremely festive evening.

The groom chose Bon Jovi’s epic, timeless ballad Always as his serenade.
With this being outside of the brilliant mariachi band’s repertoire we turned to the karaoke machine.

With the formal celebrations out of the way, a challenge was laid down to the South African contingent regarding Agardiente. This is Colombia’s national drink tasting predominantly of aniseed and comprising of loads of sugar and a lethal alcohol percentage. We’re never ones to turn down a challenge. We also dominated the karaoke machine. I’m not saying the latter is purely because of the former but I suspect it definitely helped!
